Composting Collective

A COLLECTIVE solution for Vegware on the go

More and more Vegware clients are composting disposables, but what about takeaway? Meet the Composting Collective, a bring-back scheme to capture used Vegware for composting.

How it works

The Composting Collective unites local cafes, creating a network of bring-back points for consumers to access composting. Collectively, cafes can ensure their compostable cups, containers and cutlery are composted.

Cafés with a composting scheme for used Vegware can choose to join the Composting Collective. That means they:

  • Accept used Vegware that consumers bring in for composting, even if it was bought elsewhere
  • Display the window sticker and in-café poster
  • Encourage customers to visit other Composting Collective cafés – to return used Vegware, and buy another coffee!

 How does composting work?

Industrial composting creates the perfect balance of microbes, moisture and warmth. In these optimum conditions, Vegware’s plant-based packaging composts together with food and garden waste. In under 12 weeks, this ‘waste’ is transformed into quality compost, to enrich soil and help new plants grow.

Why is compost so important?

Composting is a form of recycling which keeps resources here in the UK, unlike much UK plastic and paper which is exported far overseas with no guarantee of it actually getting recycled. UK soils are in crisis, and the UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove has warned that British farms are 30 to 40 years away from “the fundamental eradication of soil fertility”. Compost returns nutrients to the soil, and has the added benefit of improving soil structure, reducing the risk of floods.
