Frequently Asked Questions

The plastic bans vary between states and territories, as does the stance on compostable bioplastic alternatives. Visit our handy state-by-state plastic bans guide here.

NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA do not permit the use of compostable bioplastic straws regardless of certification achieved. If your business operates in these states, consider instead our paper straws or go straw-free with our sipper lid (made to fit Vegware 96 Series cold cups).

Please note Vegware are not responsible for or party to any current or future plastic bans in Australia. Any questions or concerns regarding the plastic bans and their potential impact on your business should be directed to your state EPA (Environmental Protection Authority).

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a compostable bioplastic made from plants - primarily corn - not fossil fuels.

Manufacturing bioplastics such as PLA produces significantly less carbon than conventional plastics such as PS or PET, and all Vegware PLA products are commercially compostable where accepted.

More info...

PLA straws have a general shelf life of 12 months if stored correctly*. Due to the nature of compostable bioplastics, performance can be affected by age. While the product will not biodegrade in storage, it could become brittle and discoloured.

*All PLA products should be stored away from heat & sunlight, as the material can warp and melt at temperatures as low as 40°C.
